Chaos Corona 12 is here! The updates include a better process for exporting scenes to Vantage, improvements to Corona Pattern, Curved Decals, Scatter Instance Brush in Corona for 3ds Max, and the revamped Virtual Frame Buffer.
What is Chaos Corona?
If you work in visualisation and use 3ds Max or Cinema4D, Chaos Corona is for you. It helps you achieve photorealism more easily than other rendering software. While Chaos Corona was initially created for the architectural visualisation community, it’s also popular with those in the automotive and product visualisation, game developers and visual effects artists. It’s a lot less technical than other renderers on the market, so it’s much quicker to learn and a great solution for those who want less fuss.
Corona’s powerful rendering ensures maximum realism and efficiency. The advanced lighting system offers a procedural Sky, versatile light types, and LightMix for pre- and post-render adjustments. With physically-based materials, comprehensive texture support, and compatibility with native geometry, Corona streamlines the creation of photorealistic scenes.
What’s New In Chaos Corona
Vantage Connection
Chaos have been working hard to improve the connections between their ecosystem. Last month saw the release of V-Ray and Enscape compatibility, plus Vantage’s latest update added better connectivity to those flagship products. Now, it is Corona’s turn. This update brings the ability to render test images in seconds with the new Corona to Vantage scene export. Import your Corona scene into Vantage to render still images and create Vantage animations* enjoying the lightning-fast speed of GPU rendering. But that’s not all! Live Link functionality is coming in Corona 13, which will allow users to use Vantage to render animations created in Corona for 3ds Max and Cinema 4D.
Improved Photorealism
It’s the little details that really sell a design. Using the new, easy-to-use Curved Decals feature, you can add interesting new round or curved objects to your project without distortion. This is handy for adding labels to bottles, logos on mugs, advertising on cars, and so much more.
Corona Pattern also gets a boost in this update. You can create new and incredibly realistic materials. Mix and match whether the maps follow the base object UV, the pattern object UV, or both to get the exact patterns you want without hassle.
Corona Sky now supports even lower sun angles below the horizon, which makes day/night scenes more realistic and immersive. This works across animation and still images. There’s also a new Density parameter for clouds. The lower density settings give clouds a thin and wispy look (cirrus clouds for the meteorologist among us), while the higher settings create dense, heavy storm clouds.
Additionally, the Corona Material library is now available on Chaos Cosmos. This puts an end to having to switch between two different asset libraries.
New Scatter Controls
With the new Scatter Instance Brush in Corona for 3ds Max, you can get full creative control over the scattering process. You can refine your procedural scatter to the last detail, using a brush to paint in or delete procedural instances.
New VFB & Improved Workflows
Corona 12 is introducing a new, improved version of the Virtual Frame Buffer (VFB). This comes with many new features, including new LightMix elements, an easy way to compare images with different resolutions and aspect ratios, and the ability to load a Corona EXR (.cxr) file and edit it immediately.
Other improvements
On top of the improvements listed above, Corona has some other interesting smaller updates:
- Streamlined workflow with the new Cryptomatte by material.
- Improved material conversions.
